The Difference Between the Social Security Disability Income and Supplemental Security Income Programs

Social Security Disability is available to anyone who can show they are disabled and they meet the other income requirements. You may qualify to receive Social Security Disability income benefits and medical treatment benefits under the federal Medicare program if:

  • you have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a required amount of time (or earned the required amount of income under the SSA rules) and
  • you are unable to work for a year or more because of a disability

It doesn't matter whether your disability is related to a truck accident, a birth defect, a work injury, or a serious medical condition.

SSI is designed to help blind, aged and disabled people who have little or no other income. It provides a cash benefit to help low-income people who meet certain conditions pay for food, shelter and basic living needs. If you or a family member is disabled and you do not meet the income or work eligibility requirements for SSD, you may still qualify for Supplemental Security Income, and Medicaid benefits.

If you have questions about whether you qualify for SSD or SSI, or you need help with an appeal, contact our firm today for a free initial consultation. Our firm represents people throughout Michigan in SSI disability cases, initial SSD claims, and appeals of Social Security Disability denials.
