Michigan Motorcycle Rallies: Don't Forget Your Gear

There are a number of Michigan motorcycle rallies and runs taking place from late August to late November. These events include the 10th Annual 9-11 Memorial Run, the 4th Annual Blues Bash, The Michigan Remembers Run and the 25th Annual Asgard Toys for Tots Run. The only way to make these and other events truly enjoyable is by riding safe.

Being prepared will increase biker safety. Bikers planning to attend any rallies or events should make sure their motorcycles are in good working order. Travel routes should be mapped out to note rest stops and fuel stops. Hand signals should be practiced.

When travelling, don't travel alone and be mindful of road conditions and weather. Take appropriate rest and fuel breaks. These will give you a chance to inspect your motorcycle's lights, signals, and mirrors regularly. Also, wear protective gear, including a properly fitted helmet. Plus, the safety laws of Michigan should be reviewed. In the Wolverine State, helmets are required for those riding motorcycles. Bikers travelling 35 miles per hour or faster must wear a face shield or shatterproof goggles. The safety rule is waived if the motorcycle is equipped with a windshield.

As a precaution, emergency items such as first aid kits and tool kits should be stocked and secured. Cell phones or other mobile communications devices should be charged and emergency numbers and contacts should be stored.

Motorcyclists are some of the most vulnerable rides on American highways. The National Highway and Safety Administration reports that there were more than five thousand motorcycle fatalities and 90,000 motorcycle-related injuries in the United States in 2008, with 121 of the motorcycle fatalities occurring in Michigan. Based on vehicle miles travel, the statistical odds for motorcycle deaths and injuries are considerably higher for bikers than for those travelling in SUVs, cars or trucks. Alcohol use and speeding are risk factors in many highway motorcycle fatalities. The NHTSA estimates that wearing helmets is 37 percent effective in preventing fatal injuries.

Even the best laid plans cannot protect you from the negligence of others. If you are involved in an accident, protect your life and your rights.
