Bicyclist killed in accident with large truck

A 73-year-old man who was a founding member of the Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society, lost his life on Friday in a fatal bicycle accident involving a dump truck. According to those that knew him the man was an extremely safety conscious biker. He was riding with his wife at the time of the accident.

According to news stories, the initial investigation indicates that the dump truck failed to yield the right-of-way when making a left turn. The truck was travelling in the opposite direction and turned into the bicyclist. The man attempted to avoid the oncoming truck but was struck and thrown 35 feet by the impact.

This was not the first incident involving a bicycle accident for the driver of the truck. In 2009 the driver pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge after a bicyclist reported that the driver had used his dump truck to force him into oncoming traffic. The incident which occurred in the same area as Friday's fatal crash was described as a 'road rage' incident.

The bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. His son says that even when he was young his had forced the family to wear helmets even before anyone else was. Another rider who had accompanied the man many times described him as the "safest rider I've ever ridden with."

Unfortunately no matter how safety conscious a bicyclist may be they will always be more vulnerable to accidents than the occupants of motor vehicles. Bicyclists will likely always be at risk from reckless drivers.
