Drunk driving suspected in three-car accident

With the New Year's Eve holiday last weekend, there was a substantial amount of warning about the dangers of drunk driving. Michigan law enforcement authorities are not shy about letting the public know that they will be on the lookout for drunk drivers at this time of year. This is in addition to the decades of efforts to increase public awareness of the dangers of drunk driving in an effort to reduce the numbers of people injured or killed as a result of drunk driving accidents.

Despite the warning and public information campaigns, drunk driving accidents still occur with alarming regularity. Last Wednesday evening, a Flint woman was hospitalized for injuries she sustained during a three-car accident suspected of being related to driving while intoxicated.

The accident occurred just before eight o'clock in the evening last Wednesday. The woman was reportedly driving west as she approached an intersection and failed to stop at the stop sign. As she attempted to cross the intersection, her car was struck by a northbound pickup truck. Subsequent to the collision with the pickup truck her car was hit again by another vehicle. The woman was airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospital with injuries that are described as life threatening.

The investigation into this accident remains ongoing, but initial reports indicate that the woman's blood alcohol concentration may have been nearly three times the legal limit in Michigan. We can only hope that as this New Year progresses the messages about the dangers of drunk driving will take root and the number of accidents like this will diminish.
