Drunk driving suspected in fatal crash

Most often when we think of the dangers posed by drunk driving accidents it is to those drivers and passengers in other cars. But it is often the case that other than the drunk driver themselves, the passengers in the car of someone driving under the influence may by the most at risk. A 33-year-old female motorist was arrested last week for suspected intoxicated driving after her car veered off the road and rolled over, killing a 21-year-old man riding as a passenger in her vehicle.

The female driver is reportedly a resident of Powell Township, while her deceased male passenger lived in Big Bay. She was taken to Marquette County Jail after being identified as the driver of the crashed vehicle by witnesses to the accident. Michigan State Police hurried to the scene after being notified of the accident shortly after 3 a.m.

Her vehicle was traveling north when it rolled over after hitting a bank of snow. It came to a stop after hitting the guy wire attached to a nearby utility pole. The male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, as emergency responders were unable to do anything to revive him after his body was extricated from where he was trapped inside the car.

Another witness to the fatal accident who had apparently also been a passenger in the crashed vehicle was interviewed by Michigan State Police while being treated for injuries at Marquette General Hospital. In addition to state police officers, emergency responders coming to the scene of the accident included staff from the Marquette General Health System EMS, Marquette County Rescue Unit 131, Marquette Township Fire Department, Powell Township Fire Department, and Powell Township EMS.
