Michigan trucking company involved in accident that killed 6

As many people have now heard, this weekend a tragic truck accident involving a Michigan trucking company took place in Kentucky. A tractor-trailer was reportedly following a Ford Expedition too closely when the truck struck the SUV, resulting in the deaths of six of its occupants--four adults and two children. Two additional children in the vehicle were injured and taken to local hospitals.

Prosecutors have not yet decided whether they will charge the truck driver. Although it was snowing Saturday, police reportedly do not think that weather was a factor in the fatal truck accident. In the aftermath of this crash, red flags have been emerging regarding earlier safety violations of the Michigan trucking company.

According to the Detroit News, the trucking company that was involved in this truck accident had received 17 traffic citations in the previous two years. This significant number of violations led federal authorities to ask states to inspect its vehicles very closely, but nonetheless the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration gave the truck company a satisfactory rating regarding its performance over the previous two years.

The traffic citations were for a number of violations, including following another vehicle too closely, failing to wear a seat belt, improper lane change and speeding.

The Detroit News also found that during the past two years, about 20.3 percent of the company's trucks that were inspected were taken out of service. This is actually below the national average, which is about 20.7 percent.

When it came to driver inspections during that time period, 5.6 percent of the company's drivers that were inspected were taken out of service. This is a bit higher than the national rate of 5.51 percent.

It is important that trucking companies take federal regulations very seriously, as accidents involving commercial trucks are often fatal. Victims of truck accidents, or their surviving family members, may sometimes recover compensation from truck drivers, truck companies or other parties in the aftermath of a truck accident. This process is very complicated and it can be beneficial to seek legal guidance.
