Tractor-trailer equipment failure caused accident that killed 7

We frequently discuss the dangers of large truck accidents in this Detroit Motor Vehicle Accidents Law Blog, and the severity of that danger was illustrated when a horrible tragic accident took place in New York earlier this week. As many people have now heard, on Wednesday a trailer broke free from a truck and crashed into a minivan outside of Syracuse. Three adults and four children were killed. One adult was injured and has since been released from the hospital.

It has now been revealed that the tractor, which was carrying crushed cars, dislodged from the truck as a result of some sort of equipment failure. The local sheriff's office reported today that a part that is supposed to lock the coupling between the trailer and tractor failed, according to the Associated Press.

At this point, it is not yet clear why that part gave out.  The crash remains under investigation and it there have been no tickets or criminal charges issued.

It will be very important for investigators to get to the bottom of this to learn whether any party should be held criminally accountable or civilly liable for this terrible truck accident. Additionally, it is very important to determine why that integral part failed so that such tragedies can be prevented in the future.

In order for our roads to be safe, it is necessary for truckers and trucking companies to follow state and federal safety regulations. It is also imperative for state and federal regulators to learn what is causing accidents in order to keep their regulations up-to-date.
