Michigan man killed in fatal hit and run

A Detroit man was killed in a fatal accident while attempting to cross the street. The 23-year-old man had just departed from a group of friends and was on his bicycle crossing the street when he was struck by a vehicle. That first vehicle failed to stop and fled the scene. The man was then struck by a second vehicle which also fled the scene. Finally he was struck by a third vehicle which did stop.

Law enforcement officials are looking for the drivers of the first two hit and run vehicles, described as a mid 1990's blue Chevrolet and an Early 2000s white van. The police have indicated that they will not be pressing charges against the third driver who stopped at the scene after colliding with the man.

While any accident that results in a death is a terrible tragedy this incident seems particularly egregious. It is hard to imagine how the victims family must feel knowing that not one, but two vehicles struck their loved one and then simply drove away without stopping to render any assistance or even waiting to see if the man was seriously injured.

Anytime a pedestrian or bicyclist is crossing a street they put themselves at the mercy of car drivers who we expect to act responsibly. Unfortunately pedestrians and bicyclists are in a vulnerable position without any protection if they are struck by a vehicle. It is the duty of every driver to avoid negligent or careless driving that could result in this type of tragedy.
