Two children hurt in apparent drunk driving crash

The mother of two children injured in a Kalamazoo accident was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The 24-year-old mother and her companion also both sustained minor injuries in the car accident. Both children suffered broken legs in the crash. The three-year-old girl is listed in serious condition; her four-year-old brother is in stable condition.

According to public safety officers, the accident appears to have occurred when the woman lost control of her vehicle and struck a utility pole while driving drunk.

Local news reports say that the just prior to the accident the mother and her male passenger were arguing and that the woman was driving erratically. Police report that neither child was restrained in a child safety seat when the crash occurred.

While law enforcement officials continue to investigate the accident the mother is being held in the county jail. In addition to the drunk driving charge the mother also faces a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in child endangerment.

While it is unfortunate that individuals who choose to drive after drinking put themselves at risk of serious injury or death from a car accident, it is tragic when they inflict the repercussions of their decisions on other innocent people.

An incident like this is particularly upsetting. The young children were put at risk not only because the driver had been drinking, but were also left utterly vulnerable in the crash because they had not been buckled into a car seat. Fortunately it does not appear that the children's injuries are life threatening.
