A second fatal crash on Interstate 75

The night of July 17 proved to be a deadly one on the roads of Berlin Township, Michigan, and Monroe Country police are investigating the reasons why. While interstate 75 can be as dangerous as any other stretch of highway it is fortunately unusual that two fatal crashes would occur one nearly right after the other within such a short span.

Rescue crews responded to a fatal crash at 11:45 p.m. on northbound Newport Rd. and a second accident at 2:30 a.m. on northbound I-75, which combined to claim two lives while injuring two others.

The night's first fatal crash claimed the life of a Trenton man, who was traveling in a 2007 Ford Ranger with his son in the passenger's seat. The son suffered injuries, but survived. Responders pronounced the man dead at the scene and sent his son to the Oakwood South Shore Hospital in Trenton in stable condition.

Police determined that speed was a factor in the crash.

Police discovered a 2001 Hyundai Elantra driven by an Adrian man struck the Ranger from behind as both cars headed northbound on the highway. The impact of the collision sent both cars off the side of the road. The Ranger overturned after hitting a guard rail, while the Elantra rolled over but came to rest right-side-up.

Police continue to investigate the crash and seek witnesses with further information.

We shared the circumstances surrounding the other fatal crash earlier this week in this space. In that crash two young female cousins were killed when a wrong-way driver whom police suspect to have been under the influence of alcohol crashed head on into their car.
