Four car pileup leaves 8 injured

Around 6 p.m. on July 24, a car accident involving four separate vehicles occurred in New Buffalo Township on Red Arrow Highway near Lakeshore Drive. The accident resulted in the injury of eight individuals. Everyone involved in the crash survived.

According to police who were at the scene, the accident occurred because the first driver was forced to slow down for a vehicle that was in front of them turning left. Directly behind that vehicle was another car whose driver tried to slow down and stop their car in order not to hit the first vehicle. Their attempt was unsuccessful.

After hitting the rear corner of the vehicle in front of them, the second car was sent flying into the center lane. At this point, another vehicle going the opposite direction was unable to stop in time and hit the second vehicle head on, which made that vehicle roll over several times. Finally, one last vehicle was unable to stop in time before hitting the second vehicle which was still in the center lane. The crash closed the highway for a number of hours after the accident.

Police say that two of the injured persons were treated on the scene, but that six of the individuals were brought to St. Anthony's Hospital in Michigan City, Ind., to be treated for some serious injuries.

Police said that they do not believe the cause of the crash had anything to do with any drivers being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. However, the crash remains under investigation by the local sheriff's office.
