M-57 Crash Leaves One Person Dead, Another Injured Critically

Police are currently investigating the circumstances of a fatal accident to determine whether a red van that was pulling a small trailer traveled across the center line of M-57, near Shaner Avenue NE, on Sunday, June 26. This accident caused three vehicles to collide and one person to lose their life.

One of the people inside the van was killed during the 6:25 p.m. crash. Another person who was traveling in the same vehicle sustained critical injuries, but is expected to live.

The accident is being investigated by Michigan State Police. The crash caused M-57, also known as 14 Mile Road, to be closed to all traffic until late in the evening. It has since reopened.

Mickey Davis, the Courtland Township Fire Chief, said the pickup truck and red van were traveling in opposite directions when the collision took place. A motorcyclist slid his bike across the pavement while trying to avoid colliding with the two vehicles.

The motorcyclist and the driver of the pickup sustained the least serious injuries in the crash, said Davis.

Davis believed that the van may have traveled over the center line to collide with the truck, but he does not know the actual cause of the accident at this time. The trailer pulled by the van was emptied and debris was found in a ditch nearby. While the police believe that they have a basic understanding of the cause of the crash the exact cause remains under investigation.

The current medical conditions of all the accident victims are unknown.
