Michigan high school student drowns on German field trip

As parents there are few things more frightening than the specter of our children coming to harm when they are in someone else's care. We hope the teachers, daycare providers and camp counselors will be as vigilant and concerned for their safety as we are. But the truth is that no one you can hire will ever be as concerned for our own children as we are. The best that we can hope for is that the staff is well chosen and well trained and proper safety precautions are well followed.

The nightmare of the death of child while in someone else's care became tragically real for one Michigan family recently after the death of their son on a high school trip to Germany.

The son was on field trip with his school, Manchester High. The school has been providing this opportunity for its German language students for the last 20 years. The trip is intended to provide them a chance to refine their German skills and learn more about German culture.

Local news reports indicate that a group of students from the field trip had been swimming in a lake at town outside of Berlin. It is not clear what sort of supervision was provided or whether this was planned activity. The son drowned while swimming in the lake. An investigation into the incident is ongoing and will hopefully shed some more light on the exact cause of the tragedy.

The school has arranged for grief counselors to be available at the school to help students cope with the loss of their classmate.
