One semi driver killed, another injured in early morning crash

While semi trucks play an important role in the Michigan economy by transporting goods from manufacturers to consumers across the state, unfortunately when they are involve in an accident the results are often catastrophic. Michigan State Troopers are investigating a fatal accident this morning in interstate 94. The fatal truck accident involving two semi tractor-trailers occurred at 6:30 this morning about 30 miles west of Ann Arbor on I-94 near Jackson.

According to law enforcement officials it appears that one of the semi trucks was stalled in the left lane on the eastbound side of the interstate. Another semi truck was unable to stop in time to avoid the disabled semi and collided with it.

The driver of the second semi, a 61-year-old man from southwest Michigan, lost his life in the fatal accident. The driver of the semi which had been disabled was also injured in the crash. He was taken to Allegiance Health care center with what were described by authorities as non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities closed the eastbound lanes of interstate 94 in the area while they cleared the wreckage from the two semis and began investigating the scene of the accident. The interstate has since reopened in both directions.

While any traffic accident can result in a tragedy, when huge tractor trailers are involved the sheer size and weight can result in devastating collisions. The state and federal governments have developed numerous regulations in an attempt to minimize the risk that these big rigs pose but this obviously does not completely mitigate the risk.
