Passenger injured when SUV swerves to avoid line of ducks

A Michigan woman was transported to a Grand Rapids hospital after the SUV she was riding in was involved in a roll-over automobile accident on Monday. According to local news outlets the driver had swerved to avoid a line of ducks crossing the street when lost control of the vehicle.

The 18-year-old female passenger was airlifted to the Central Michigan Community Hospital with what initial reports indicated was a skull fracture. Apparently she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was ejected from the vehicle when it rolled over. The driver was treated and released for minor scrapes and bruises.

A 19-year-old man from Weidman was driving the 1993 Ford Explorer when a line of ducks reportedly appeared in the roadway. The county sheriff's office says that the driver attempted to slow down upon seeing the ducks but in doing so lost control of the vehicle.

The SUV then crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and continued off the opposite edge of the road. The vehicle went into the ditch and rolled over at least twice.

The SUV finally came to rest back in the middle of the road sitting upright on all four wheels with most of its windows blown out.

While drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as factors in this accident, it is not yet clear if the driver may have been traveling at an unsafe speed. Often when a driver is traveling too fast or not paying sufficient attention to the road, what would otherwise be an avoidable obstacle in the road can lead to serious crashes.
