Teen injured seriously in SUV Crash

A teenage driver was transported to a hospital in Ann Arbor on June 23 after an accident involving a building and her SUV.

Around 12:10 p.m. the Pinckney resident was traveling eastbound on Main Street in downtown Brighton when she says the accelerator in her vehicle became stuck as she turned turn north on Grand River Avenue. Thomas Wightman, Brighton Police Chief said that the driver lost control of her SUV as she was turning.

The vehicle with the broken accelerator began to speed and eventually spun out, turning onto the driver's side. The teenager's Ford Explorer then struck a building, located next to a Thai Express restaurant, said Wightman.

The police chief noted that the Ford Explorer's roof had crushed down onto the teen driver. Michael O'Brian, Fire Marshall of the Brighton Area Fire Department, said it took about 12 minutes for firefighters to remove the SUV's roof and remove the teen from the wrecked vehicle. She was transported to the Medical Center at the University of Michigan to be treated for the broken bones she sustained during the crash.

Wightman and O'Brian noted that damage to the building was minimal.

There can be many causes for motor vehicle accidents. Generally accidents are caused by the driver not paying proper attention or are driving impaired, in other accidents a driver may be driving under the influence. In other case however a malfunction in the vehicle may contribute to a crash. It is unclear at this point whether the apparent vehicle malfunction in this case may have been due to a defect in the manufacture of the vehicle or improper maintenance.
