Two critically injured in Michigan semi truck crash

Two Ann Arbor residents are were seriously injured when the car in which they were driving was struck by a semi trailer. The truck accident occurred on interstate 94 just before one o'clock yesterday afternoon in between Ann Arbor and Battle Creek.

According to local news sources the two Ann Arbor residents were driving a Honda sedan westbound when traffic in front of them began to slow down. They were able to slow down their car in time to avoid the cars in front of them but the semi truck behind them was unable to do so.

The truck was not able to slow down in time to avoid the Honda. In an attempt to avoid a collision the semi truck drove onto the shoulder on the right side of the road. The front of the semi was able to avoid the car but the trailer swung around struck the Honda.

The car was then thrust into another semi truck which had stopped in front of it in the right lane.

The 27-year-old passenger in the Honda was taken by helicopter to the University of Michigan Medical Center. The 30-year-old driver was initially taken by ambulance to a regional medical center but then also transported by helicopter to the University Medical Center.

It is not yet clear whether an initial investigation by law enforcement officials has identified whether excessive speed, inattentive driving or some other factor may have played a role in this accident.
