Head-on car crash kills one

A female motorist in Macomb County, Mich. was involved in a fatal accident Aug. 5 that took the life of another motorist. The 52-year-old woman, a resident of Macomb Township, was reportedly traveling north when her car went over the centerline in the road, plowing head-on into a car driven by another 52-year-old woman, a resident of Clinton Township.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after the crash occurred, a few minutes after 8 p.m. They declared the other motorist dead at the location of the accident.

The exact causes of the accident are still under investigation. Accidents like this one, however, are generally the result of drunken driving or drivers operating a vehicle while distracted. Out of the 37,261 traffic fatalities in 2008, statistics show that 13,846 of them were alcohol-related. This is a decrease from 1982 when alcohol-related traffic fatalities were 26,173 out of a total of 32,945 traffic deaths, or 60 percent.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) counts a car crash as alcohol-related when a motorist has a blood alcohol level of .01 grams per deciliter. The NHTSA also found, in a 2007 survey, that over 11 percent of drivers over a weekend who were driving at night tested positive for the use of illegal drugs, whether marijuana or stronger substances, such as cocaine or heroin.

Police have said that use of drugs or alcohol could be involved in the accident. The surviving motorist was taken into custody by police following the incident.

Laboratory tests are being conducted on evidence gathered at the scene and Clinton Township police are waiting for the results before commenting further.

Authorities have not yet released the names of either of the women involved in the accident.
