Husband killed and wife seriously hurt in motorcycle/car collision

On Sunday evening, tragedy befell a Michigan couple when a car apparently turned into the path of their motorcycle. Hopefully this will be the last such tragic accident this year as the Michigan motorcycle riding season begins to wind down.

The exact cause and sequence of events leading to last weekend's motorcycle accident remain under investigation, but local news sources provide a preliminary description of the accident. The couple on the motorcycle was headed eastbound on a Michigan highway. A Ford sedan was approaching from the opposite direction when the driver of the car attempted to make a turn into his driveway. The car and the motorcycle crashed head-on. The collision threw both husband and wife from their Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The man who was driving the motorcycle was described as being unresponsive when rescue crews arrived. Paramedics attempted to revive the 53-year-old husband after the motorcycle accident, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The 48-year-old wife was also seriously injured. The wife was transported by ambulance to a local hospital then transferred to a larger regional medical center. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and was treated and released.

Too often, other drivers simply fail to notice or acknowledge motorcycles. This failure can lead to serious accidents. When a motorcyclist is involved in an accident with a larger and heavier vehicle, it is generally the motorcycle rider who receive the more serious injuries, regardless of the cause of the accident.
