Michigan school bus crash injures student

A 15-year-old student was injured Wednesday when the school bus in which he was riding crashed. The motor vehicle accident occurred on Interstate 94, north of Detroit, in Harrison Township. The 15-year-old boy was transported to Mount Clemens regional Medical Center, but the nature of the injuries did not appear to be serious.

When we put our children on a school bus, or even hop on a city bus o into a taxi ourselves, we expect that the driver is going to drive responsibly. We put our trust in the skill and judgment of that driver to keep us safe. While some accidents are unavoidable it is every driver's duty to do all they can to ensure the safety of their passengers and others on the road.

According to local news reports the bus driver apparently lost control of the vehicle in a strong thunderstorm. The storm was reported to be producing high winds and hail at the time of the accident, about 8:30 pm. After the driver lost control the bus struck a sign before going into a ditch.

At the time of the crash the bus was carrying about 40 students who were members of the Anchor Bay High School soccer team. Authorities had to call in a 14 ton truck to extract the bus from the ditch. Another school bus was sent to take the rest of the students home.

Authorities have not indicated whether an investigation into the crash is still ongoing or if they are likely to consider any charges citations against the bus driver.
