Driver involved in weekend crash set to face charges

A woman from Michigan's Upper Peninsula is facing a charge of careless driving which resulted in serious injury after she crashed into a couple on a motorcycle. The accident happened in Ontonagon County in the Upper Peninsula.

Ontonagon County Sheriff Department investigators report the accident happened in the early evening hours as the 25-year-old woman and a friend were traveling on Himanka Hill Road heading toward US-45.

At the accident scene, the woman told Sheriff Deputies that the bright sun was directly in her eyes and that she was temporarily blinded as her car approached an intersection stop sign. The friend riding with her alerted the driver that she had to stop immediately whereupon the driver hit the brakes. The car skidded through the intersection and into the path of a motorcyclist carrying a man and a woman coming from the opposite direction.

The motorcyclist and his female passenger were hurt in the crash. They were both transported by ambulance to a hospital in Ontonagon for treatment of their injuries. The condition of the motorcyclist and his passenger was not released by the hospital.

The woman that caused the accident was removed from the accident scene by police and charged with careless driving causing serious injury. Her name was not released and officials said it would not be made available until she is arraigned in court at the end of September. Until her arraignment, the 25-year-old woman remains free after posting a bond with the court.

The Ontonagon County Sheriff Department was assisted at the accident scene by troopers from the Michigan State Police. Rescue workers from the Wakefield and Bruce Crossing Fire Departments were also on hand to provide immediate assistance to the crash victims.
