Separate car accidents claim two lives in Upper Peninsula

A woman died from injuries she sustained in a car accident on Aug. 27 in Iron River Township, Michigan while a separate automobile accident claimed an additional life two days later.

The 70-year-old woman, who was piloting a Chevrolet Lumina that carried two passengers en route to a local vegetable stand, was broadsided by a van after exiting a private driveway and turning onto U.S. 2 at 12:36 p.m. A local man carrying six passengers drove the van that struck the woman.

While the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital upon her arrival, the other two passengers in the Lumina were brought to a hospital. One was held and listed in serious condition while the other was treated and released.

All individuals in the van, which were on their way to work at the Ojibway Correctional Facility in Gogebic County, Michigan, escaped the accident unscathed. They all were treated and released from a local hospital.

Initial reports of the accident didn't cite who was at fault or if any charges would be filed.

It proved to be a dangerous few days on the roads of western Upper Peninsula, Michigan as a 22-year-old man from Houghton also died as a result of a single-car accident. At 12:40 a.m. of Aug. 29, the man rolled his Ford Taurus over and trapped himself inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into that crash was also pending, so authorities would not release his name or further information about the accident.
