Family killed in fiery crash in southwest Michigan

Tragedy struck yesterday afternoon when a mother and father, their 1-year-old son, and the woman's mother al lot their lives in a fiery car accident in southwest Michigan. A man who lived near the location where the crash occurred said that he was watching television when he hears a loud explosion. When he ran to his yard he could see the cars engulfed in flames and here cries for help.

According to Michigan State Police a 43-year-old woman was driving her pickup truck eastbound on U.S. Highway 12. At some point the woman lost control of her vehicle and veered off the road. The pickup truck driver apparently attempted to recover and pulled her truck back onto the road, but seemingly overcorrected ending up crossing the centerline. After crossing the center line the pickup truck struck the car carrying the family head-on. The 51-year-old father was driving; his wife, her mother and their one-year-old son were all occupants in the car.

After the collision both vehicles ignited. While the woman driving the pickup truck able to get out of her vehicle but the four people inside of the car were unable to escape before being overcome. The neighbor that had run outside said that he could hear cries from the car but it was already engulfed in flames and he was unable to approach it.

Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the exact sequences of events that led to this fatal crash. As we leave the house each morning for work or school, it likely never occurs to us that tragedy could strike along the way. Another driver who takes a moment to glance at a text message while driving, or who gets behind the wheel when they are impaired can have catastrophic consequences.
