Fatal accident claims the life of a Michigan woman

Every day in Michigan drivers are faced with a large number of decisions that can be fairly described as 'judgment calls.' Is there enough space to safely pass another car on a two lane road? What is a reasonable speed to drive when the highway is wet or covered in snow? Other decisions though should have an obvious answer. Should I send a text message while I'm driving? Should I stop at this stop sign?

Tragically it was the failure to stop at stop sign that led to a fatal accident in Michigan yesterday. The resulting fatal accident led to the death of a 71-year-old woman and required the hospitalization of two others for treatment of their injuries.

Just before five o'clock in the early evening, the 71-year-old woman was a passenger in a Buick traveling north towards an intersection. At the same time, a 28-year-old driver was travelling westbound in her Dodge approaching the same intersection.

According to Michigan State Police, the 28-year-old driver disregarded the stop sign on her road before entering the intersection. The Dodge struck the Buick with sufficient force to not only push it across the intersection, but also to snap the utility pole on the other side.

Both drivers suffered serious injuries and were transported by ambulance to local hospitals. The driver of the Buick, in which the deceased woman was a passenger, was later flown by helicopter to a larger regional medical center.

While we can all hope that drivers will make the right decision when faced with a judgment call, it is even more crucial that all drivers follow the more basic rules of the road as well.
