Motorcyclist serious injured in crash with truck

As fall comes to the parts of Michigan that have escaped it so far, the motorcycling season is winding down. Even now, only the heartier bikers are still on the roads, and in coming weeks the remaining motorcycles will likely be put into storage for the winter. Unfortunately the end of the biking season is not without its share of accidents.

Yesterday morning, a 40-year-old motorcyclist suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a pickup truck. The motorcycle accident occurred just before eight o'clock on Monday morning, about 30 miles south of Battle Creek.

According to the local sheriff's department, the motorcycle rider was riding on a state highway about to cross an overpass over interstate 69. At the same time a 59-year-old Michigan man was approaching in the opposite direction. The other driver attempted to make a left turn onto the interstate on-ramp but crossed directly in to the path of the oncoming motorcycle.

The motorcycle struck the right front corner of the truck. The motorcycle rider was taken by helicopter to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and is reported to be in serious condition.

This crash remains under investigation as county deputies and Michigan state police work to reconstruct the exact sequence of events that led to the crash.

As anyone who owns a motorcycle can tell you, riding a motorcycle can be a safe and fun pastime, as well as an economical and environmentally friendly way to commute. While many drivers pay attention to motorcycles and respect their right to share the road, occasionally some drivers simply fail in their duty to drive safely and neglect to see or account for a motorcycle in their path.
