One dead, five injured in tragic teen car accident

A 17-year-old high school student was killed in a car accident that also injured five others on Oct. 7, mere hours before the girl was to participate in her school's homecoming celebration. The accident occurred while the girl and her friends were traveling to school early Friday morning.

According to responding emergency workers, the girl was a passenger in a vehicle that was traveling in Brockway Township at 7:15 a.m. when the vehicle hit an oncoming SUV that had run a stop sign. Authorities stated that there was heavy fog on the road at the time, which may have blocked the driver of the SUV's view of the sign. The victim's vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, broadsided the SUV at the intersection of Emmett and Yale roads, and both vehicles were thrown into the grass off the roadway.

The damage to the Toyota Corolla was so bad that responding emergency workers were forced to remove the roof to extract the driver and passengers. The SUV came to rest on its side, off the road.

The three occupants of the SUV, and the driver and second passenger of the Corolla were airlifted to local hospitals. The 17-year-old girl that died as a result of the accident was pronounced dead several hours later at a local hospital.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the accident, but have not yet released the identity of either driver, or what specific factors may have led to the crash.
