Semi crash on Interstate 94 spills150 gallons of diesel fuel

Two semi drivers were injured in crash on Interstate 94 just before eight o'clock this morning near Jackson, Michigan. Both drivers were taken to Allegiance Health Center for treatment of their respective injuries, which were not described as serious.

The two semi trucks were driving one in front of the other just prior to the accident. The second semi rear-ended the first semi truck when it was unable to slow down in time after the leading semi had applied its brakes to avoid another vehicle. The truck accident remains under investigation.

Law enforcement officers at the scene of the accident reported that the first semi may have had to slow down rapidly and unexpectedly to avoid hitting a car that had merged into its lane. The car that alleged to have cut off the leading semi did not stop after the crash and the police did not receive either a description of the car not its license plate number.

The accident closed the eastbound lanes of the freeway for more than an hour this morning as crews worked to remove the wreckage. The diesel spill required authorities to keep one of the lanes closed while Jackson County road crews and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality responded to the spill.

In this incidence it was apparently a car cutting in front of the semi that led to the accident. But no matter the cause of a crash involving a semi truck, the size and weight of the truck can cause serious and damage and injuries.
