In a near fatal car accident in MIchigan this past weekend, two teenagers were pulled from their vehicle mere moments before the car exploded. The car accident occurred when the two teens in a 1990 Mazda allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of Douglas Road and M-46, striking a passing 2000 Dodge Caravan. The Dodge Caravan was driven by a 52-year-old woman. Also present in the minivan was a 2-year-old child, secured in a car seat in the back seat of the van at the time of the crash.
Michigan State Police were notified of the car accident at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. According to the passing motorist that reported the accident, the scene appeared to be very serious. It is not clear whether the vehicle was on fire when the two teens were extracted from the car.
According to police, the two 18-year-olds present in the 1990 Mazda were extracted from their car by strangers that stopped to provide assistance. Only moments after they were pulled to safety, the vehicle exploded. The woman and child in the Dodge Caravan had already exited their vehicle. Although the 2-year-old suffered minor injuries during the accident, the other three parties involved in the accident were taken to local hospitals for treatment. At this time, their conditions are unknown.
Police are expected to perform a full investigation into the accident, but details are not yet available as to whether the driver of the 1990 Mazda will be cited for failing to yield at a stop sign.
