Critical injuries to female motorist in two-car crash

A 42-year-old female motorist from Scottsville, Michigan, suffered critical injuries Last week in Howell Township when her car was struck by a pickup truck. Her 2002 Oldsmobile was traveling south in the right lane on M-59, but suddenly made an unexpected hard left turn, winding up directly in front of a 1998 Dodge pickup truck moving forward in the left lane. The truck then collided with her vehicle.

The crash was initially reported as a fatal car accident, but later reports indicated that the female motorist was clinging to her life in the University of Michigan Medical Center, where she was rushed following the accident.

Emergency responders from the Howell Police Department, the Livingston County Emergency Medical Service (EMS), the Howell Area Fire Department, and the Michigan State Police all converged on the scene of the collision between Interstate 96 and Grand River Avenue. They secured the site and diverted traffic, closing the highway from Burkhat Road and Grand River Avenue for some time.

The 16-year-old male driver of the pickup truck, who is a resident of Howell Township, apparently was not injured in the accident. The female motorist was not buckled into her safety belt at the time of the crash, according to the local sheriff, which may have been a factor in the severity of her injuries. While the accident remains under investigation by law enforcement, the sheriff indicated that it does not appear that alcohol played any role in causing the crash.
