Semi accident leaves two dead

Two Michigan residents were killed in a fatal semi accident that left three tractor-trailers battered and two engulfed in flames. Reports from law enforcement officials indicate the crash occurred when a semi truck crossed the median on Interstate 94 and collided with two other semis heading in the opposite direction. Police believe all three trucks were moving at highway speed when the accident occurred. They believe the first truck hit the second with a glancing blow, causing it to slide into the third.

Shortly after the crash settled, two of the vehicles had caught fire. Firefighters arrived after much of wreckage had burned down, spraying the charred frames to control the remaining fire. The wreckage left by the crash slowed highway traffic for about eight hours following the collision. Both the driver and the passenger of the first truck were killed in the crash. Authorities declined to identify the victims, as their next of kin have not yet been notified of the accident.

A passenger in the second truck and driver of the third sustained minor injuries and were transported to medical facilities for treatment. Officers have not determined why the first truck crossed the median. The accident remains under investigation.

The accident was the second fatal semi accident on the same stretch of roadway in five months. In June, a truck driver was killed after his semi slammed into the back of another just a mile away from the more recent crash.
