Crash kills motorist who stopped to help another driver

A 48-year-old man from Mackinac Island was killed over the weekend when a semi tractor-trailer crashed into his car after he pulled over to help another driver. The fatal accident occurred on Interstate 75 on Saturday morning. An officer from the Michigan State Police indicated that black ice and slippery road conditions may have played a role in the accident.

According to local news reports, the 48-year-old man and his wife were travelling on I-75 at about nine in the morning on Saturday when another car spun out. The couple stopped to offer assistance, and ended up pulling over to the side of the road.

The man and his wife were in their car, along with the two occupants of the vehicle that had spun out, waiting for first responders to arrive. While they were waiting a semi truck approached, when the semi attempted to change lanes the driver lost control of his truck. The semi crashed into the couple's car killing the husband.

The wife and the two occupants of the other car also sustained serious injuries in the collision. They were transported to Otsego County Hospital for treatment. The truck driver was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

This is not the first time we have shared a story this season about fatal accidents in which slippery road conditions are a factor. While snow, and particularly black-ice, undoubtedly pose a challenge to Michigan drivers. It is still each driver's responsibility to maintain control of their vehicle and avoid undue risk to others on the road.
