Investigation continuing in accident that killed preschooler

Police said a 4-year-old boy was the victim of a fatal accident in Michigan that also left a 25-year-old man in critical condition.

While the Michigan State Police continues the search for answers, some details of the two-car accident are emerging. A Chevrolet Monte Carlo, with the boy, the injured man and two other passengers inside, was heading westbound along Lake Road when it collided with a sport-utility vehicle that was traveling north on Bray Road. The Monte Carlo wound up in a ditch.

Also in the Monte Carlo were a 27-year-old woman and an infant. Both were in stable condition at Hurley Medical Center after the fatal accident. The occupants of the Monte Carlo all lived in Birch Run.

Driving the Ford Expedition SUV was a 41-year-old man from Flint. He was taken to Hurley for examination, then was treated and released. His two passengers walked away from the scene and did not require medical care.

Though the investigation continues, state police did issue a news release that gave some details of what they believe happened.

The initial indication is that the driver of the Monte Carlo did not stop at a stop sign where the streets meet, police said. Police also believe that some of the occupants of the car did not have on seat belts, which they said could have led to the boy's death and the driver's serious injury.

It is unknown which passengers had seat belts properly fastened or if the children were sitting in approved child-safety seats.
