Michigan man killed in head-on crash with semi

The former village president of Manchester, Michigan lost this life in a fatal crash with a semi truck about 25 miles southwest of Ann Arbor on Wednesday morning. A spokesman for the local sheriff's department say that icy roads in the area combined with he described as "improper diving" were the likely causes of the crash.

According to the law enforcement official, the 72-year-old former village president was driving his 2011 Ford Fiesta north on M-52 as a semi truck was approaching from the opposite direction. Another vehicle in front of the semi had slowed down to make a turn and the semi attempted to brake. At that point the semi driver lost control of his rig, carrying 8,000 lbs. of milk, and his truck jackknifed into the northbound lane.

The semi crashed head-on into the man's Ford. The cash pinned the 72-year-old man inside his vehicle. Rescue workers responding to the crash were required to cut away the passenger cabin of the vehicle from around the man in order to extricate him. The accident victim was transported by air to the University of Michigan Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Another driver also suffered more minor injuries when the truck he was driving was also struck by the out of control semi truck.

It should be no surprise to motorist in Michigan, especially professional truck drivers that they must modify their driving behavior once winter weather sets in. Icy conditions at the end of November should not be an unexpected occurrence for any driver in Michigan.
