Alcohol suspected in fatal accident

Earlier this week, two young children were involved in a serious car accident in eastern Michigan near Detroit. One of the children, a 2-year-old boy, was killed as result of his injuries following the crash. His 8-year-old sister survived the fatal accident, but was still critically injured.

Michigan law enforcement officials believe that the accident was caused by a 62-year-old Shelby Township man. It is also suspected that he was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the deadly crash, according to Detroit police investigators. He suffered injuries requiring medical attention at the local hospital.

According to the sergeant on duty, the Shelby Township man struck a mother and her two children head-on in their vehicle. She and her children were reportedly headed northbound on Hoover at approximately 6:15 p.m., when the Shelby Township man was headed southbound. According to the police report, he had crossed the centerline in order to get around the car in front of him. As he attempted to pass in the opposite lane he struck the oncoming vehicle.

The driver was arrested on scene, and taken to the local hospital to treat his injuries. The 8-year-old child that was critically injured was transported immediately to the hospital for treatment. There is no information regarding the health and well-being of the mother, or if she sustained any life-threatening injuries.

This fatal accident will be forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review once Detroit police have finished conducting a full investigation. There is no report as to when this investigation will conclude as officers are still looking for additional information from witnesses.
