Pedestrian accident leaves child dead, mother injured

A fatal accident involving a 20-year-old Detroit woman and her 14-month old daughter took place Monday evening on 8 mile road. The driver was a 29-year old man in a Ford Explorer. The accident occurred when the mother, pushing her daughter in a stroller, were both hit by the Explorer while crossing the road.

Both mother and child were rushed to Beaumont Hospital, the child died at 12:30 a.m. The exact cause of death of the child has not been released at this time. The mother is in stable condition, suffering from a broken leg and slight head injuries. The man driving the vehicle did not display any signs of injury and did not require any medical treatment.

The man who struck the mother and child stopped at the scene of the accident and was fully cooperative with authorities. The man was released after questioning and the accident is still an open investigation. He does not face any criminal charges at this time. There was no initial indication that the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident. Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact sequence of events that led up to the fatal accident. All traffic lights were working properly at the time, so an equipment malfunction is not suspected.

Police are looking for any witnesses to the accident that might be able to shed light on how this tragic accident occurred. Any witness or others who have information that could shed light on this accident are encouraged to call the Southfield Police Department.
