Winter weather causes accidents and delays

Winter weather led to multiple accidents and other delays on Detroit roadways recently after an inch of snow fell. The winter weather led to multiple delays due in part to the need for drivers to move slower along the snow covered roadways to avoid an accident. This is a proper precaution that most drivers take during winter conditions, unfortunately some drivers fail to do so.

A number of accidents on both the north and southbound sides of Lodge freeways led to the closing of traffic while the scene was cleared. At least five accidents were reported over the course of the morning, causing major delays and road closings around the Detroit metropolitan area, which wasn't hit nearly as hard as other cities in the area.

More snow and cold temperatures are expected to continue, and the drop in temperature brings another threat to drivers: ice. Ice, especially black ice, which is difficult to see, can be a really big problem for motorists. The number of accidents seen as a result of this light snow makes it important to reiterate the need for safe driving in winter weather conditions.

During sever winter conditions, it is advised to stay in your home and avoid going out unless it is emergency. If you must go out, take your time, do not try to drive at normal speeds, even if it means it takes longer for you to get to your destination. Speeding in slick weather conditions is a very dangerous combination. It is also important that your car has an emergency kit in the event that you become stranded in this cold weather, which includes blankets, batteries, flashlights, and non-perishable foodstuff.
