Wrong-way DUI accident sends four drivers to the hospital

Early on Sunday morning, just before four a.m. Michigan State Troopers near Ann Arbor were called to Interstate 94 for a report of a car accident that had resulted in injuries. Like so many other accidents that cause injuries this one appears to have been related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

It is often the case that accidents involving drunk drivers result in more serious injuries, many times there is excessive speed involved. Other times, the judgment and skills that a driver would ordinarily rely upon to mitigate the impact in a crash are overcome by the driver's intoxication. In this case the driver was headed the wrong way on the interstate.

According to the Michigan State Police an Ann Arbor woman was driver her late model Lexus east in the westbound lane of Interstate 94. She struck another car driven by a 23-year-old man. Police believe that the driver of the Lexus was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. But, the accident did not end with the initial collision.

As traffic on the interstate slowed down as a result of the initial crash, a Pinkney man failed to stop in time and crashed into the back of car driven by a woman from Gregory. Her car was then pushed forward into a jeep. Police say that alcohol appears to also be a factor in this second crash.

All four drivers injured in both accidents were transported to the University of Michigan Hospital with injuries that were not described as life-threatening.
