65 car crash and 129 other accidents in Saginaw

Several car accidents occurring on I-75, in an area south of Bay City in Saginaw County, Michigan, closed the road for a time on the evening of Feb. 10 following a snowstorm which blanketed the region. 911 dispatchers received reports of approximately 129 other car accidents in the county, but fortunately, there appeared to be no serious injuries. Five minor injuries were reported and firefighters had to struggle to get one driver out of his SUV, where he was pinned after an accident.

The multi-car crash was estimated to have involved approximately 65 cars, or possibly even more. It closed traffic off on the road until stopped and disabled vehicles could be cleared away so that at least a single lane of traffic could be made accessible to traveling motorists by about 8 p.m. The pileup involved a Midland Public Schools bus, but fortunately, it was not transporting any children at the time, and the bus driver escaped injury.

The spate of accidents occurring on one evening in the icy winter road condition underlines the fact that in winter weather, it is a serious responsibility of motorists to drive safely, proceed slowly, and attempt to keep their vehicles under control for their own safety and the safety of others traveling on the road.

The snow wound up freezing into ice on the roads, and flurries of it reduced visibility on the highway. The mounting number of accidents, at one point, came close to overwhelming the resources of the area's emergency responders, with a total of 18 accidents waiting for police personnel to arrive on the scene.
