Lansing teen killed in crash returning from choir performance

The teenager from Lansing who lost his life in a car accident near Grand Rapids was reported to have been on his way home from a church choir performance when he was killed in a car accident. The teenager was riding as a passenger in large van with his family and other members of the church choir on interstate 96 on Sunday when the van was involved in the crash.

When we are involved in school or church activities, or allow our children to be involved in them, we assume that the organizers of the activity will use all reasonable care to ensure our safety or that of our children. While unfortunate accidents may not be entirely avoidable, the unfortunate results of those accidents can often be mitigated when all applicable safety procedures are in place.

According to local news reports the trigger for this accident was a tire blowout in the van, which resulted in a los of control by the 22-year-old driver. The van then struck another vehicle and slip off the roadway. While the result of any investigation into this particular crash have not been reported, it is always important that professional drivers are properly selected and trained and that vehicles are well maintained.

The news reports of this fatal crash indicate that 17 people were riding in the 2002 Chevrolet Express van that was designed for 14 passengers. It seems likely that unless some custom modifications were made there would not have been a sufficient number of seat belts for all occupants.
