Fatal accident in which the two vehicles never touched

Fatal car accidents generally involved the collision of two or more vehicles. There are also instances of single car accidents in which road conditions or unsafe or impaired driving causes one vehicle to crash into some other object. But there is another category of accidents that fall somewhere between a collision between two vehicles and a single-car accident in which no other vehicle is involved.

This category includes accidents in which the actions of one driver cause a separate car to crash despite the fact that the cars never collide. This can occur when one driver cuts in front of another and the other driver loses control of their vehicle while trying to avoid an accident. Another scenario, which tragically played itself out in Michigan recently, is where an unsecured load falls off one vehicle and causes another vehicle to crash.

In this accident a truck was carrying square bales of hay which were apparently not sufficiently secured. One of the bales fell from the truck as it drove down the highway landing in the path of a car that was driving behind the truck. The driver of the car attempted to maneuver around the hay bale which had unexpectedly fallen in front of his car but in the process, lost control of his vehicle.

The car went off the road and rolled several times. According to Michigan State Police a man in the car was taken to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing where he died as a result of his injuries. His wife was also injured in the crash but is reported to be in stable condition.

Police have conducted an accident reconstruction of the incident and are reportedly considering felony charges against the driver of the truck.
