"I just didn't see them. I was in a hurry ..."

A news report out of Detroit quotes a driver who struck a school bus as saying, "I just didn't see them. I was in a hurry on my way to a dentist appointment. I was wrong." Fortunately in this case the injuries to the students in this accident were reportedly not severe, though six of the seven children on the bus were taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation of their injuries.

The accident occurred yesterday morning, according to reports the woman driving the car failed to obey a yield sign just before striking the bus. AS is the case in many accidents, it seems like the woman behind the wheel was not devoting her complete attention to the road. This sort of inattentive driving is even more likely to lead to an accident when someone is preoccupied, distracted or in a hurry.

In this case it sounds like the woman suspected of causing the accident is truly sorry for her actions and prepared to take responsibility. This is actually a very refreshing attitude. Too often in car accidents everyone involved is focused solely on escaping responsibility for the crash, blaming the other drivers, road conditions or anything else that they can think of to avoid the blame.

It is reassuring to see a driver take responsibility for her actions, though of course it would be preferable if she had followed the rules of the road and driven more responsibly in the first place. Though hopefully after such an experience, she will drive more safely in the future.
