Springtime heralds danger for motorcyclists

It is likely that every motorcyclist in Michigan is excited about getting out on the road if they have not done so already. The first ride of the season is an exhilarating marker that the winter is finally behind us and that the open road and summertime lays ahead. While this is an exciting time to be a motorcycle rider it can also be a dangerous out.

Car and truck drivers, after months of cold weather in which motorcycles were not present on our roads, may find themselves overlooking or simply not noticing motorcycles. Unfortunately these oversights can lead to serious and even fatal motorcycle accidents.

There have already been several fatal motorcycle crashes in Michigan this season. In one crash that took place in south western Michigan a driver said that he simply did not notice the motorcycle and its rider as he began to make a turn. That crash remains under investigation.

Every year, law enforcement officials try to warn car and truck drivers that they must share the road with motorcycles and pay attention for them. While motorcyclists have the same right to the road as any other motor vehicle, they are much more likely to be injured or killed in a crash if another driver cuts them off or fails to notice them.

With the rising gas prices recently more people that ever will likely be riding motorcycles not just for fun and transportation but as a way to save a few dollars on their daily commute. With this influx, drivers are responsible to ensure that they give the same respect and courtesy to motorcycles as they would to any other vehicle.
