Wrong-way crash takes life of Michigan college student

A young woman from Bay City was killed in a car accident early this morning when another driver travelling the wrong way on Interstate 75 collided head-on with the car in which the young woman was riding. Two other young women who were riding in the car with the Bay City woman were also killed. All the occupants of that car were students at Bowling Green University and were on their way to the Detroit airport to begin their spring break. The 69-year-old woman who was driving the other car the wrong way on the interstate was also killed in the crash. In addition to the three people that were killed in the accident two other students were seriously injured.

Law enforcement officials say that the crash occurred at a point on the interstate where the roadway came to a crest, meaning that the young students likely had no opportunity to see the oncoming vehicle and try to avoid it before it struck them. There has not yet been any indication from police as to why the 69-year-old woman was headed southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75, or whether alcohol may have been a factor in this accident.

It is utterly disturbing to be faced with the fragility of life when something like this occurs. All five of the young college students involved in this accident certainly had bright and promising futures ahead of them as they headed toward the Detroit airport to begin their spring break.
