Drunk driving killed 8-year-old boy

A drunk driving accident in Grand Rapids, Michigan took the life of an 8-year-old boy. The female motorist who was driving the car which killed him recently pled no contest to a charge of drunk driving causing death.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 13. The woman's Lexus went through a stop sign, according to police, while traveling down Harvard Avenue NE. Subsequently, it collided with a Chevy Venture in which the boy and his family were traveling in on 14 Mile Road.

The 8-year-old boy's injuries from the impact of the crash were so serious that medical personnel were unable to save him. His 10-year-old brother, also present in the family car, was also seriously injured, suffered a punctured lung and a total of nine fractured ribs.

The female motorist admitted to having had some drinks at a party that she attended that night. Upon questioning, she further stated that after leaving the party, she drove to a bar where she guzzled down either four or five more beers, as well as a couple of shots of hard liquor, before getting back in her car to go back on the road.

Police summoned to the scene had the two boys removed to a medical facility, directed traffic around the crash, and conducted an investigation of the causes of the accident. As part of that investigation, they tested the female motorist for intoxication. The motorist's blood alcohol content following the accident registered 0.117, well above the legal limit of 0.08, making her legally intoxicated and unqualified to drive.
