Higher risk of car accidents on tax day?

Those who will be driving to a post office to send in their tax returns may want to take extra care to avoid being involved in a car accident. A recent study indicates an increase in the number of automobile accidents on the day that tax returns are due, generally April 15, but falling on April 17 this year.

It is likely that a driver who is in s stressful state of mind or is in a hurry is more likely to cause a serious motor vehicle accident in Michigan. Unfortunately a driver racing to file his or her, just-completed tax return on time is likely subject to both of these conditions. But this may not be the only factor leading to an increase in traffic accidents on tax day.

In addition to increased speed and stress, many drivers searching for post office box on tax day may be travelling on an unfamiliar route. Studies show that drivers are less likely to be involved in accidents when they are travelling route that they know well. Checking a map or GPS device combined with a lack of familiarity with local traffic flows may contribute to the risk of causing an accident.

According to researchers, there is an increase of about six percent in serious accidents on tax day. While this is not a staggering increase it results in about 13 extra deaths and significant monetary damages.

While this increase risk of accidents on tax day may not justify staying off the roads altogether, it is a good idea to employ your best defensive driving techniques and stay alert for those last minute tax filers.
