Investigators working to explain fatal Bloomfield crash

The death of loved ones is difficult enough when they pass away peacefully. It is especially hard for a family to endure the death of someone they love in a violent or fatal accident. Sometimes the only solace for survivors is the knowledge of how and why a relative's death occurred.

Investigators gather evidence and talk with witnesses to determine what happened. Courts help determine whether negligence plays a part. The effort to explain through facts what happened during an accident and the legal process to bring a careless driver to justice help family members understand and process these awful events.

A fatal accident in Bloomfield Township on a Sunday afternoon took the life of a Traverse City woman who had spent the last days of her life helping her sister celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary. The long-married sibling was the driver of the car in which the 72-year-old victim was riding.

Police reports say the Saturn sedan, occupied by the two sisters and a Florida couple, was headed across Telegraph Road near Square Lake Road just after 1 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. Investigators think the driver of a northbound pickup truck that slammed into the Saturn crossing the median ignored a red light.

The driver's sister suffered fatal injuries. The male Florida passenger remains hospitalized with unspecified injuries. The injured passenger's medical condition was not reported.

The driver, the Waterford Township woman who had just crossed a marriage milestone, and the female passenger from Florida managed to escape serious injuries. Both were treated and released from an area medical facility.

Bloomfield Township traffic investigators do not believe the truck was speeding or that the driver was drunk at the time of the crash. A common traffic infraction may have been the root cause. The investigation of the fatal crash is still underway.
