3 children injured, 1 dog dead in Ashland Township

Newaygo County authorities reported that three children and a dog were hit by a motorist Tuesday night, June 12. Apparently, the group was walking along the road when a vehicle hit all of them. The three children, one girl and two boys between the ages of 9 to 14 were taken to a hospital and treated for injuries they suffered as a result of the car accident. One was injured so severely that the child had to be airlifted by helicopter to the hospital; the other two children were taken by ambulance. Unfortunately, the dog that was with them died at the scene.

The report from Ashland Township, about 25 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, does not indicate what kind of road the children were on. If it was a gravel road, a two-lane road or a highway. We also do not know if they were walking on a sidewalk or simply the shoulder of the road. While the news story tells us the children were hit by the driver at night, it does not say what time of night, or if it was completely dark at the time.

According to authorities, the driver of the vehicle was treated for minor injuries, presumably at the scene of the crash. We do not know if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or if the driver will be charged with any violations including reckless driving or speeding.

And while pets are merely considered chattel, the parents of the children may be able to recover not only damages for their pain, suffering and medical bills; but they may also be able to request additional reparations for the traumatic experience of losing their pet in such a horrifying manner.
