Free boater safety certification class this weekend

Throughout Michigan we are blessed with a wealth of outdoor recreational activities in, on and around the water. Hopefully we all have a friend with a boat, a jet ski or other personal watercraft that they will invite us to enjoy with them sometime during the summer.

And of course, accidents are bound to happen. Would you know what to do if you encountered a boat accident this summer?

"I didn't know," doesn't work as a defense if you injure someone on the water or are charged with careless or negligent boating.

This Saturday, the Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety is offering free boater safety classes for the whole family. Public safety authorities remind us that everyone born after 1978 is required to have a boater safety certificate if they wish to operate watercraft of any kind.

The class is open to people of all ages and children are especially encouraged to attend. Completion certificates will be awarded to all who complete the one-day course. For more information or to register for this important certification class, call 517-788-4223.

Whenever we have an accident on our lakes, several rescue and public safety officials are involved: township police officers, first responders from the public safety department and of course, the county sheriff's department who patrols our waters.

Being educated, aware and certified are great defenses against any claim that may be filed against you while enjoying our summer and water sports.

Remember, any child under 12 must wear a life vest when operating, riding or being towed behind a personal watercraft or jet ski.
