How Safe Is Your Hospital?

Bronson Methodist Hospital, Bronson Battle Creek, Lakeland Regional Medical Center and Lakeland Community Hospital are among 34 hospitals in Michigan that received an "A" on a Hospital Safety Score recently released by The Leapfrog Group. They were among 729 hospitals across the nation that received an "A."

Leapfrog measured the scores using 26 different factors available to a survey panel. The rankings were based solely on patient safety, and the survey was conducted by thoroughly evaluating hospital records.

According to Leapfrog, nearly 400 people die in hospitals every day due to medical mistakes that could have been prevented. Leapfrog conducted the survey in hopes of giving patients a chance to make educated and thorough decisions when choosing medical facilities, and to increase visibility to hospital error.

The final grades are not meant to punish low scoring hospitals or allow those with good scores to become complacent. The scores are simply to educate patients. The goal is for each hospital across the country to eventually receive an "A." Leapfrog hopes the scores will motivate hospitals to either maintain their status or strive for fewer medical errors and a higher score.

For the Michigan-based hospitals that each received an "A," the score is undoubtedly a boost to hospital staff morale. Still, these hospitals have room for improvement. Doctors are humans and will continue to make mistakes. The survey conductors hope to encourage hospitals to reduce errors and work to increase patient safety.
