Belleville teen girls killed in car accident

Two teenage women from Belleville were killed in a two-car crash at an intersection in Canton Township on July 24. The girls, ages 18 and 19, were passengers in a Chevrolet Cavalier driven by a 24-year-old Whittaker man. The crash occurred at approximately 2 a.m. at the intersection of Canton Center Road and Michigan Avenue.

The Cavalier was hit by a Monte Carlo driven by a 21-year-old Westland man heading east and the victims' car was heading south. According to Canton Police the light signals at that intersection are only flashing yellow and red at that time of the day. They said the investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing and they have no idea what could have caused the fatal motor vehicle accident, though police did say that neither speed nor alcohol is believed to have contributed to the crash.

Apparently the Cavalier was hit on the passenger side by the Monte Carlo. Both male drivers were taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor where they were treated for minor injuries and listed in stable condition. The report did not indicate whether or not any of the victims were wearing their seatbelts.

Police say the crash closed the intersection for several hours. They had not released the names of the victims, nor indicated if the girls might have been related.

Recovering compensation after a catastrophic, tragic accident like this one can help families cope with the devastating loss. It allows family members to focus on grieving, rather than the money problems, medical bills and funeral costs. Especially since the victims were so young, their families may be entitled to damages for mental anguish and loss of companionship.

In addition, if it is found that the flashing traffic lights were malfunctioning, the families may be able to file a claim against the municipality or entity responsible for the operation and maintenance of the traffic signals.
